Federal Government plans 6000 megawatts to enhance power supply –Minister of power, Adelabu

The Federal Government has announced plans to boost electricity megawatts from 4000 to 6000 within the next three to six months in a bid to improve power supply. The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, made this declaration during a meeting with Heads of Power Agencies and industry stakeholders in Abuja on Monday.

Adelabu emphasized the need to elevate the current megawatt capacity, stating, “4000 megawatts is not acceptable.” He outlined the goal of increasing the capacity to a minimum of 6000 to 6500 megawatts within the specified timeframe. He expressed confidence in the sector’s infrastructure, citing a previous peak generation of 5700 megawatts in November 2021.

The minister confirmed that several generation companies possess the capacity to generate the targeted 6000 megawatts. However, operational challenges arise from gas supply shortages, hindering optimal utilization of the installed capacity. Adelabu stressed the importance of addressing these issues to ramp up generation once gas supply stabilizes.

Acknowledging the public’s frustration with inconsistent power supply, Adelabu assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to reverse the situation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving stable electricity supply, highlighting ongoing initiatives to address root causes and improve service delivery.

Adelabu underscored the administration’s dedication to enhancing the power sector to promote economic growth, industrial development, and overall quality of life for Nigerians. He emphasized the need for collaboration with Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to ensure performance and accountability in service delivery.

In conclusion, the minister reaffirmed the government’s resolve to prioritize electricity sector reforms and urged stakeholders to collaborate in achieving sustainable power supply across the nation.
