On May 2, Charles Okello Engola, Uganda’s State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, was shot and killed by his bodyguard, Pte Wilson Sabiiti, at his home in Kyanja.
Sabiiti then used the same gun to take his own life at a nearby trading center. Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, stated that Engola was shot at close range and that Sabiiti had fired multiple shots.
According to an eyewitness, Sabiiti had not been paid Ush4 million and was struggling to support his pregnant wife and children, while the minister’s children were attending school.

Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, confirmed the minister’s death during a plenary session and expressed condolences.
“He was sh%t at his residence in Kyanja by one of his bodyguards who allegedly fir€d several sh%ts at close range. He fled from the scene up to the trading centre at Kyanja, Ring Road where he entered a salon and also sh%t himself d€ad,” police spokesperson, Fred Enanga told journalists in Kampala.
Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Anita Among also confirmed the minister’s death while presiding over the plenary session Tuesday morning.
“This morning, I received sad news that Hon Engola has been sh%t by his bodyguard. May his soul rest in peace. That was God’s plan. We can’t change anything,” Ms Among said.
“The guard said he hadn’t been paid Ush4 million. He said he had a pregnant woman and his children were not going to school yet the minister’s children were schooling,” an eyewitness said, according to The East African.
